Calls home are such a blessing. And making time for siblings to connect is so important!

Sibling phone calls are a great way to stay close and keep in touch, especially when you can’t be together. These calls let siblings share stories, laugh, and support each other through good times and bad. Talking regularly helps keep the bond strong and shows that you care about each other’s lives. It’s a simple way to make sure you stay connected and maintain a loving relationship. Building this kind of closeness is important because it helps siblings feel loved and supported, creating a lasting connection.

Each sibling relationship is different too. Some can talk for hours, and some struggle, especially over the phone. I had one missionary who could engage with the younger siblings with ease, while another one struggled each week to find stuff to say.

First, I want to make the comment that everybody has the potential to be a hard companion to someone else who has a different personality than you.

That being said, we’ve talked to many return missionaries about this topic and here are a few hard companions with some fun stories to go along with them. All the names have been changed, but the stories are true, and come from a handful of return missionaries.

HEADACHE HANNAH
This was the most loving companion I had. She was so sweet, and so easy to love. What made this companionship difficult was that she had crippling migraines. It wasn’t all the time, but it was often enough that I had some significant downtime. I still wanted to be a productive missionary, but I had to figure out how to do that in the apartment for hours at a time, while she was sleeping off her migraines.

WHAT I LEARNED: Being bored, although it can be a tool for trouble-making, it is a powerful tool for creativity. During one of her migraines, I drew a picture of Christ, which I didn’t know I could do. Another time, I started some really cool scripture study projects that I still refer to 20 years later. I am especially grateful for learning this life lesson now that I have kids. I try to teach them that being bored is okay, and to use that time to be creative, rather than depend on screen time or someone to entertain them.

When you find yourself in those difficult situations, it is good to reflect on the things that are in your control, what God is trying to teach you, and how you can change, learn, and grow from this. You can also write down a list of positive attributes in your companion, to help you see them how God sees them. It is also helpful to remember that, although you could be with this companion for weeks or months, there is an end to this trial, it will not last forever.
