How to Prepare for Your Mission Spiritually, Mentally, and Emotionally

Updated: Jun 28

Here at My Missionary Box, we have all kinds of ideas for how to prepare for your mission physically, like what to pack and what info to gather for your parents before you leave. But this week, we want to talk about how to prepare Spiritually, Mentally, and Emotionally.

I will be honest, I didn’t really want to go on a mission. And honestly, I didn’t think I would ever even have to make that choice. Back in my day, the earliest age a sister missionary could go was 21, and I thought for sure I would be married by then! Absolutely! No question! I would be snuggling into my newlywed life way before I would even have to think about a mission. Spoiler alert: I got married when I was 32. Ha!

When my 21st birthday was sneaking up on me, I got the thought that maybe I should pray about going on a mission. I didn’t even want to think about it. It scared the snot right out of me.

This is literally how I prayed about it: “Should I go on a mission? Nope! Okay good, because I didn’t want to go anyway. Glad we’re on the same page.” Then three days later I would get that nagging little feeling like I needed to pray about it again. So I would, and I would do the same thing again.

Finally, I was in the kitchen with my Dad, who also happened to be my bishop at the time, and I randomly said, “So Bishop, how do I get papers for a mission?” I instantly felt a weight lifted.

At this particular time in my life, there were things I was praying for – things I wanted to know, characteristics I wanted to have, and the person I wanted to be – and in that instant, I knew serving a mission was the real answer to my prayers. I still felt all my fears – they didn’t go away – and I moved forward anyway.

I didn’t have much time to really “prepare” for my mission. I asked for papers in September, I got my call in October, and I was in the MTC on January 3rd. However, because of some of the things I was already doing, like going to institute, going to the temple every week, and learning how to study the scriptures, I still felt fairly ready.

I asked around, and got ideas from a few moms and missionaries to see how they prepared for their missions. For all their suggestions check out this printable in our shop:
