When Zach left on his mission, he still owned two vehicles that he asked us to sell for him. One of the buyers was a little skeptical and felt concerned about whether or not we really had permission to sell the 4Runner. He asked for a signed power of attorney from our missionary. **sigh**
That turned out to be a lot of work.
Zach was serving in rural Mexico and didn’t have the resources to do that easily. He did it. And the guy bought the car. So it all worked out. But it took a lot of work.
Also while Zach was gone, we needed to renew the xbox membership. It was set up with Zach’s email address and password (naturally) and we needed that information to be able to renew. My kids explained all the reasons why we needed to keep that account (rather than setting up a new one) and we ultimately had to wait until p-day to get the needed info.
It wasn’t the end of the world (or was it?), but it was an annoyance that could’ve been easily avoided.
To help you avoid some of these potential hiccups, here’s a few things to consider before your missionary leaves:
Gather Passwords & Logins - bank account, email addresses, social media accounts, apple ID, xbox membership, other memberships, etc.
Add a Parent to Your Bank Account - change the contact email and phone number to your parents, so they can be available for any problems that may come up, so you can focus on your mission, and no fees pile up unexpectedly.
Call Your Cell Phone Provider - ask them to suspend your phone number (that means they’ll save your number for you), most companies charge a small monthly fee to hold the number for you.
Be Sure Your Cards Aren't Going to Expire - check your credit card/bank card, drivers license, passport, etc. to make sure they aren't going to expire while you are gone. And if they are going to expire, make a plan now of what you want to do when it does.
