Do you know people who are choosing not to serve a mission? It's a decision that comes with its own set of considerations, and offering judgment-free support is key. Here's how we can do that:
Open Communication: Start by having an open and non-judgmental conversation. Ask how they're feeling and what led to their decision. Understanding their perspective is the first step in providing meaningful support.
Respect Individual Choices: Everyone's journey is unique. It's crucial to respect and honor the choices people make regarding their mission service. And remember that there are so many ways to serve and contribute in your community.
Encouragement for Personal Growth: Highlight that personal growth and service can happen in various forms. If you have stories of others who have found purpose and fulfillment in different paths, share them. Help them see that a mission is just one of many opportunities.
Offer Unconditional Love: Let them know that your love and support are unwavering, regardless of their decision. Feeling accepted and loved is really important during times of important life choices. And especially when outside pressure can feel heavy.
Explore Other Ways to Contribute: Encourage exploration of other service opportunities, both in and out of the church. There are countless ways to make a positive impact on the lives of others, and finding the right fit can be really fulfilling.
Create a Supportive Environment: Foster an environment where they feel comfortable sharing their feelings and experiences. Having a supportive community can make a big difference.
Patience and Understanding: Decisions about mission service are personal - everyone is on their own journey - and may take time. Be patient and understanding and give them space to figure it out without pressure.
I love Elder Renlund's talk from Conference just a few days ago. He was talking about ministering, and it also applies to our topic this week:
